Appearance:

Kaylee is a girl of average height with very expressive brown eyes and a bright smile. She has long, brown, curly hair that she wears down most of the time, but it inevitably goes up while she's working. Bright colors and floral prints are her favorite to wear, even if they're worn under a mechanic's jumpsuit, which is her usual attire as working on Serenity tends to be a dirty job. When Kaylee has the chance, though, she enjoys wearing poufy, frilly, and fun dresses just as much as the next girl. She wears little makeup, if any, but it wouldn't make much of a difference as her face is usually covered in streaks of grease and dirt.

Personality:

To put it simply, Kaylee is a sweetheart. She came from a lower class family on the border planets. Working with her dad (when there was work, anyway) gave her an appreciation for the finer things that has stuck with her throughout her life. That appreciation is extended to real, fresh food in place of nutrient bars as well as taking care of her things. She's a mechanic through and through and although she may not know exactly what she’s doing at all times machines just ‘talk to her,’ and she’ll find a way to get the job done no matter what it takes, despite her lack of formal training.

She’s looked at as a little sister by most of the crew of Serenity and enjoys the designation immensely. She’s generally a very happy person, going through life with a grin on her face. Kaylee is the first one to accept new people into a group and enjoys talking to them, thinking there is always something new to learn. She very much enjoys being a part of the crew of Serenity and to her they’re not just the crew, they’re her family. She takes her commitment to them very seriously and is fiercely loyal to those who deserve her loyalty. She’d lay down her life for them without a second thought. Occasionally she will fall into a bout of depression but it is usually caused by something hurtful someone has said to her and does not manifest itself spontaneously. It never lasts long, passing as soon as someone does something to make her smile and laugh, which doesn't take much. She's easily amused by people's quirks, though sensitive enough not to make fun of them for it unless she's really certain she won't offend them.

Kaylee is very very attached to Serenity herself, as well. Serenity is her baby and to insult her is to do so at your peril. Should you do so you will see a very different side of ‘Little Kaylee.’ She can be viciously mean and hold a grudge for ages if she deems it necessary, but she doesn’t like to. Being mean to others makes her feel just as bad as she's made them feel. She doesn’t like the way guilt feels, so she avoids it if at all possible.

Despite the guilt she feels for making others feel bad her sense of right and wrong can be a little foggy at times. She does't feel bad for the smuggling and the thievery committed to keep Serenity running and the crew fed. If asked what they're doing she'll happily answer 'crime' with a smile and no trace of guilt, as long as those people asking aren't going to get her and the crew into trouble for what they're up to. In fact, as far as she's concerned, they're the good guys and the Alliance is the one causing harm.

Events:
Joining the crew of Serenity: Kaylee was young, perhaps somewhat naive, but certainly well qualified when she met Serenity's first mechanic, Bester. Although he claimed the problems with the ship were irreparable she fixed Serenity on the spot. It didn't take long for Mal to fire him and offer her the job. Joining the crew provided her an opportunity to see the 'verse and get off the tiny border planet she was raised on, as well as find a new family in the crew. If she hadn't joined the crew, giving up her family and home life, she never would have met her new family and gotten involved in the smuggling trade. Her moral compass is a little less rigid than it may have been. Instead, she would have continued working for her father as a mechanic on a border moon and life would have been significantly less adventurous.

Being shot in the stomach: The last thing Kaylee expected when she walked into the cargo bay was to take a bullet in the stomach. Although she'd been around those types of injuries since joining the crew she'd never expected to endure one herself. The injury gave her a new perspective on the fragility of life as well as just how much the crew cared for one another. Unfortunately, it did scar her and leave her with a fear of firearms that hasn't faded. The injury changed her opinion of people a bit. She is not as blindly trusting of people as she once was. Instead, she is more suspicious that someone who seems to be a friend may turn on her and those that she cares about without warning and that she'll be unable to stop it.

Writing Sample:

They're docked, which means fresh food. Fresh food means fruit. Kaylee has an apple. No one, not even River who's hot on her heels, is going to take it from her.

She laughs as she runs. She hears Mal yell at them as they pass him but honestly doesn't know what he said, too concerned with keeping her fruit. This isn't the first time they've done this and Mal always says the same things. You might break the cargo or if you get hurt who's going to fix the ship? As far as she was concerned, he really needed to relax.

She knows if she makes it to the kitchen, their unwritten finish line, she can claim the fruit as officially hers. She passes through the door frame and turns around, laughing and smiling as she raises the apple high in victory. "It's mine! Now power in the 'verse can- huh?" She blinks and looks around, slowly lowering her hand.

This isn't Serenity. She's outside where there's grass and trees and no ship. She turns around slowly, looking lost. There's no ship, and that's not okay. "River? Mal?" She turns around slowly once more. "Guys?"

She feels herself start to get upset, worried, even a little panicky, and decides to sit on a nearby bench and figure things out. She turns the apple in her hands nervously. This is not the little boarder moon they had been docked on. It doesn't look like anywhere she's ever been.

She already misses the crew.
